How To Type Pinyin Tones In Android?

How To Type Pinyin With Tones Transliteration In Android Smartphone?

Preparation

To type Pinyin Tones you must prepare these following step:
  1. Start by installing a keyboard that supports Pinyin input. Popular options include "GBoard - the Google Keyboard" or any other Chinese keyboard available on the Play Store. 

  2. Once installed, go to your "Device's Settings" ( gear-shaped icon ) 
  3. And select "System & update" -> "Keyboard & input method" -> "Manage keyboards".

  4. Tap the switch on the right side of Gboard row to activate the Gboard app. Then tap under the "Gboard". 

  5. Tap "Languages". 

  6. Tap "+ Add keyboard". 

  7. Type "Chinese".  Then tap “繁體中文(台灣)拼音“ keyboard row.

  8. Tap on "拼音“ ( PinYin ). 

  9. Tap "Simplified Chinese" switch, if you need it. Tap "Done" button. 
  10. Tap "Back" button on the keyboard. 
  11. Close the "Settings"  app.

To Type Consonant (initial) on Android: 

  1. Tap on the editor field area. 

  2. If the input type language of the keyboard is Chinese. Tap and hold the spacebar button on the keyboard ( the white rectangle with language label, for example 拼音 ). Then choose English keyboard ( for example ). 

  3. Tap Shift button ( up side arrow ), if you need it. 
  4. When typing, you can enter Pinyin Consonant by tap the letter keys. In this example, we type W letter.
     

To Type Vowel (Final) on Android:

  1. Tap on the editor field area. 
  2. If the input type language of the keyboard is not 拼音 ( PinYin ). Tap and hold the spacebar button on the keyboard ( the white rectangle with 拼音 label ).  Then choose 繁體中文(台灣)拼音 keyboard. 

  3. Tap and hold the letter that you need. Slide to the desired tone mark. In this example o to ǒ. 

  4. Finish. The ǒ has typed successfully. 

Note

  • Practice using the keyboard to become familiar with the tone input process.
  • Press and hold vowel then slide to desired tone mark.
    • ā = a with first tone. 
    • á = a with second tone. 
    • ǎ = a with third tone.
    • à = a with fourth tone. 
    • ī = i with first tone. 
    • í = I with second tone. 
    • ǐ = i with third tone.
    • ì = i with fourth tone.
    • ū = u with first tone.
    • ú = u with second tone.
    • ǔ = u with third tone.
    • ù = u with fourth tone.
    • ē = e with first tone.
    • é = e with second tone.
    • ě = e with third tone.
    • è = e with fourth tone.
    • ō = o with first tone.
    • ó = o with second tone.
    • ǒ = o with third tone.
    • ò = o with fourth tone. 
    • ǖ = ü with first tone. 
    • ǘ = ü with second tone. 
    • ǚ = ü with third tone. 
    • ǜ = ü with fourth tone. 

In this tutorial, I'm using Realme Smartphone UI and Text Editor by Byte Mobile. You may change to other Android smartphone and other text editor then adapt the step according to your gadgets.
