Font for Math

The following Unicode fonts include a comprehensive set of mathematical characters and are free for academic use. (Windows/Macintosh)

Windows – Arial Unicode MS, Cambria Math (Vista+), MT Extra font (Microsoft Equation Editor 3.0 objects/Microsoft Equation 3.0).

Macintosh OS X – Apple Symbols, Lucida Grade.

    Typewriter, from a 1985 exam paper, in a monospaced font,
    Microsoft’s pre-2007 equation editor, using Times New Roman,
    Microsoft’s post-2007 equation editor, using Cambria Math,
    LaTeX, using Computer Modern. 

Freeware Fonts

• STIX Fonts – OTF freeware font, support in MathJax, compatibility to Times font (serif).
• Asana Math – OTF font, support in MathJax, compatibility to Palatino font (serif).
• Arev Sans –  compatibility to Bitstream Vera Sans font.or DejaVu font (serif).
• Latin Modern Math –  OTF font; Times New Roman, Georgia, Garamond font (serif); Helvetica, Arial, Tahoma, Calibri (sans serif); Courier, Consolas, GeoSlab (typewriter); Bradley Hand ITC (monoline handwritten) and some other families.
• Symbola – OTF font; compatibility to Helvetica, Trebuchet font (sans serif).
• Hindsight Unicode – OTF font; compatibility to Palatino, Garamond, Bookman font (serif) .

NOTES: compatibility to any font is only suggestion. As a result, your decision to use the font depends on your project.

 international standard suggests that

    variables should be italic,
    functions should be upright (roman),
    vectors should be bold italic,
    tensors should be sans-serif bold italic.
    operator always upright, never italic/oblique/slanted.
